Mea Culpa, a 2007 winner of the Galway Film Centre/RTÉ Short Film Award, will screen tonight on RTÉ 2 at 23.30 as part of the Shortscreen series. Directed by Virginia Gilbert, it tells the story of a daughter, who is jealous of her father’s new partner and who defends her territory. The cast include Ian Beattie, Emma Bolger and Fiona O’Shaughnessy. The film was produced by Aaron Farrell for Blinder Films and was filmed by Tim Fleming.
“Mea Culpa is a study in jealousy”, says writer/director Virginia Gilbert. “The eldest of four young children, Peggy, 13, has taken it upon herself to play the ‘wife’ of the household since the death of her Mother. But a new arrival to the local community, Julie, a young teacher, threatens to usurp Peggy’s place in the household through her budding relationship with Peggy’s father. Unable to voice the growing intensity of her feelings, Peggy finally attempt to oust her ‘rival’ in an eerie and violent conclusion.”
