Jameson Dublin International Film Festival ‘Second Look’ screenings at the Eye Cinema!

As part of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival (JDIFF) 10th anniversary celebrations, the festival is  expanding its programme to include a number of presentations across the country. This exciting development has created greater access to new films in Galway as the festival offers an extensive programme of international cinema.

The JDIFF Touring Programme in association with the Eye Cinema in Galway will give Galway audiences access to screenings from Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy and Denmark.

The first screening on Wed 22nd of February is The Mole, followed by Apartment in Athens on Fri 24th. The Italian movie A Quiet Life will screen on Sat 25th followed by The Jewel on Tues 28th, Kawasaki’s Rose on Wed 29th and the final screening is the Danish movie Superclásico on Thursday 1st March.

All the screenings start at 7.00pm and early booking is advisable as seats are limited.

Congratulations to all the winners at this year’s Irish Film and Television Awards held on Saturday Feb 11th. Special mention to all those with a strong Galway connection including Lelia Doolan who won the GEORGE MORRISON FEATURE DOCUMENTARY AWARD for Bernadette; Notes on a Political Journey. Lelia collected the award with her editor, Gordon Bruic. Also present were Paddy Hayes and Darach Mac Con Iomaire from Magamedia who picked up the SPECIAL IRISH LANGUAGE AWARD for Corp + Anam.

One of the biggest winners on the night was The Guard, which of course was shot mainly in Galway, which picked up five awards including Best Film, Director Film, Script Film, Best Supporting Actress and the IFB Rising Star Award. Another big winner was Love/Hate, which received seven awards and several recipients paid tribute to the excellent work of Casting Director, Maureen Hughes who began her career in Druid many years ago.

Interestingly Corp + Anam, The Guard and Love/Hate were all supplied with lighting equipment and generators by Teach Solais in Connemara. Teach Solais was the sole lighting contractor on these productions so congratulations to Cian de Buitléar and his crew of Mícheál Ó Mógáin. John Martin Ó Flathártha, Padraic Ó Fathartha and Dáithí Ó Mainín for keeping these shows on the road.

Special mention should also be given to Anna Rackard who won the PRODUCTION DESIGN (FILM / TV DRAMA) for her work on Stella Days. Anna facilitated the Galway Film Centre / FÁS Screen Training Ireland workshop with the creative design team behind the film, Moon which was held in Galway on February 10^th.

The Galway Final Cut Pro Users Group is open to anyone interested in post production. They meet to share information and tips on editing and work flows. The next meeting will be Wednesday 22 Feb at 7:30pm in the Member’s Room of the Galway Film Centre.

The speaker will be Padraig Kelly, editor at Ros na Rún. Mr. Kelly is in his 5th season at Ros na Rún, having started out as a VT operator after graduating from GMIT’s Film and Television degree programme. During his talk he will cover his editing experience and work flows in general. This will be a good overall talk for editors and anyone interested in learning more about professional editing. As always, there will be time for questions and answers at the end.

Lelia Doolan’s remarkable documentary on the life and times of Bernadette McAliskey (nee Devlin) was screened on TG4 at 9.30 on Monday January 30th. Bernadette McAliskey, a socialist republican activist,  served as a member of Parliament at Westminster for the Mid Ulster constituency from 1969 to 1974 during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.  At 21 years old she was the youngest MP in Northern Ireland, and remains the youngest woman elected to Parliament. This documentary covers her life and times. Well worth watching. It won the Paddy Hill Award last year at Document 9, the International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival in Glasgow, and was  nominated for the John Grierson award at the London Film Festival.

Galway Film Centre and Fás Screen Training Ireland are holding a Masterclass on the making of the film ‘Moon’ in Galway in February 2012. Its production designer, Tony Noble (The Good Shepherd, Rendition) and its art director, Hideki Arichi (Batman Begins, Troy, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith), will take part in this masterclass facilitated by production designer, Anna Rackard (Ondine, Stella Days, King Arthur).

Moon, starring Sam Rockwell and directed by Duncan Jones (Source Code), is a high concept, sci-fi drama, which won many awards and garnered worldwide attention on its release. Set on the Moon and shot over 33 days in London, its achievments and quality far surpassed its low budget of $5million. The film was made in the vein of Alien and 2001, eschewing digital animation in favour of model making and set builds. It contains over 400 VFX shots, which highlights how effectively the budget was used, considering a film like Star Wars would have approx 300 VFX shots. In a sense, the film is indie filmmaking at its finest, with one of the crew commenting that it was made by ‘a bunch of guys with a couple of laptops’. Indie filmmaking or not, the film matches and surpasses the quality of many mainstream films and blockbusters.

This masterclass will focus on the following:

• Initial design & concept
• The design process, from first conversations to concept drawings to models to built sets/miniatures to final film (with VFX added)
• Working with the VFX supervisor (How did they break down what would be built in full size, in miniature or in part build, etc.)
• An in-depth examination of the built sets & exterior moonscape
• Graphics, set decoration, lighting, backings, the robot and vehicles
• The budget and what constraints that made on the design

The masterclass takes place in Galway City on Friday, February 10th from 11.30am  to 2.30pm and costs €25. While this masterclass focuses on the work of the art department, it would be of interest to all film personnel. Darach Mac Con Iomaire and Paddy Hayes of Magamedia

The Irish Film and Television Award Nominees (IFTAs) were announced today.

Western based nominees  in the TV section include: the TV Drama, Corp + Anam (Magamedia), which received 4 nominations; the documentary series, Mobs Cheanada (Abú Media), which received 2; and the entertainment series, The Hardy Bucks (Mike Cockayne).

In the film section, the documentaries, Bernadette; Notes on a Political Journey- Lelia Doolan, (Digital Quilts)
 and Off The Beaten Track- Dieter Auner, (Ikandi Productions), were both nominated. The Guard (Element Pictures), which was shot in Galway is nominated in 9 categories.

2 of the nominees are on the shortlist for the 2012 Oscars. These are the Make -up team behind Albert Nobbs (Parallel Films) and the director of The Shore (All Ashore), Terry George.

The 9th Irish Film & Television Awards will take place Saturday 11th of February 2012, broadcasting on RTÉ One at 9.30pm. IFTA 2012 will be hosted by Irish actor Simon Delaney.

Auditions for actors take place on January 5th/6th in Galway for an Irish Film Board funded short to be directed by Seamus Moran and produced by Zanzibar Films. The production is looking for for 3 girls and 5 boys aged 16 (or who look 16). Acting experience is not essential, but 2 of the boys and 1 of the girls must be able to speak Irish.

We would like to thank all our members for their support during 2011 and wish you a merry, peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Tomorrow night is Little Cinema’s Christmas showing in Kellys Bar in Bridge St.
The night is in aid of the Galway Hospice Centre at Renmore, so it’s a great cause as well as a great nights entertainment, and they have got some brilliant prizes which will be raffled off with raffle tickets, and every cent raised will go to the Hospice.
The doors are opening at 9pm and films will start at 9.40, they expect  a big crowd, so get there early if you can, and as it’s Christmas, why not wear a nice Christmas jumper, or a Santa hat to stay in festive mood!  The entry fee is 3 euros, with film submitters getting in free and all profits from the door going to the Galway Hospice.
