Tobar Productions have just produced a sports documentary for TG4 about a footballer called Paddy O’Connell who played for Belfast Celtic, captained Manchester United, managed Real Betis in Spain to their one and only La Liga title and helped save Barcelona FC from the clutches of Franco. It’s a fascinating sports story, but also one of personal human interest as he abandoned his wife and 4 children to take up managerial posts in Spain and committed bigamy marrying for the second time in Spain. The programme will be broadcast on TG4 on Wednesday night the 3rd October at 930pm.
Directed by IFTA award winner Pat Comer (In the Name of the Fada, Tall Dark & Ó hAilpín), and produced by Gráinne McElwain (Stone Cold Sober, GAA BEO, Imeall Geal). The film was funded by the Irish Language Broadcast Fund (ILBF), the Broadcast Authority of Ireland (BAI) and TG4, and produced with assistance from Batabat, (Barcelona).

This programme is presented by Belfast actor Tony Devlin and features Paddy’s grandson Mike O’Connell, who pays an amazingly passionate and balanced tribute to his grandfather.
